A Chemist is a scientist who researches and experiments with the chemical and physical property of substances, measures the effects of chemical compounds in various situations and studies chemical reactions, and then develops, monitors and improves chemical processes and production of food products, cosmetics, drugs, and electronics.  While research and testing are the core duties of this job within the context of pure chemistry, Chemists also play an important part in planning and coordination to produce goods, including wine and spirits.  Related occupations in this workgroup include Food Technologist or Scientist, and Wine Maker or Oenologist.  Within the context of applied chemistry, Chemists work for private corporations whose sponsored researches are targeted at set goals like product improvement or discovery of a modern drug to treat a specific disease. 

There is a wide variety of jobs for Chemists.  Not all of them work in laboratories. Some can be found working in large chemical companies, engaged in Quality Control or Industrial Research. Others are into Sales of chemicals or pharmaceuticals. There are those into Forensics work as well, examining sample presence of drugs in a crime scene to assist with police investigations. While there are also those into Environmental protection, going out on the field to check on water purification, or into the Preservation of historical artworks by studying the effects of air and water pollution, or simply, into University teaching of Physical Science and Chemistry alongside some research projects with graduate students.

The entry requirement for a Chemist job is a Bachelor’s Degree or higher qualification, including relevant experience and/or on-the-job training.  As for Wine Markers or Oenologists, however, a formal qualification may not be required if there at least 5 years of relevant experience already gained.

In Australia, Chemist, Food Technologist, and Wine Makers have an average pay of $43 per hour base or $87,000 base pay per annum, on a full-time basis but less than 40 work hours weekly.  Most of them work in the Manufacturing, Professional, Scientific and Technical Services as well as Retail Trade industry.  Based on government statistics, it is projected that approximately 5,000 new job opportunities for this occupation will become available between now and year 2022.  

Essential requirements to be considered: 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Microbiology and/or Agriculture Science
  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience within the last 5 years
  • Excellent English communication and interpersonal skills
  • Keen attention to detail, positive work outlook, and strong team orientation

Desired qualifications, skills and experience: 

  • For laboratory experience, preferably from a NATA accredited lab, with experience in ICP-MS, ICP- OES, GC-MS, GC, IC, HPLC
  • If coming from a food industry, preferably with knowledge of specialised instrument food analysis e.g. Agilent GC and Waters High-Pressure Chromatography systems/LC/QQQ
  • Experience in mining, oil and gas industry – operation, optimisation and basic maintenance of analytical instruments e.g. gas chromatography, UV/VI photometry, other volumetric lab testing equipment
