Geologists are scientists that focus on the study of rock formation and physical properties of the Earth, as well as the processes that shaped it throughout history.  They work specifically to search and advise on the extraction of minerals, petroleum, natural gas deposits with prospectors, Mining Engineers, Metallurgists, and other Mineral Scientists and Engineers.  They also examine fossils and rock strata to understand evolution and evaluate their commercial applications.  Related occupations include Geophysicist and Hydrogeologist; the former study the structure and composition of zones below the Earth’s surface, while the latter deals with the distribution and movement of groundwater in the soil and rocks.

Given the core nature of Geologists’ work, most of them are usually found in the Energy and Mining sectors as they help locate natural resources on land, or in the Government sector as they assist in detecting, preventing, and mitigating potential damages from natural calamities and disasters and providing warning to the public on the events that are about to happen.  Some Geologists also worked in the construction industry to attend to engineering issues, land use or resource management.   

A relevant Bachelor’s Degree or higher is required to become a Geologist, and related on-the-job training and work experience are highly regarded.  Recent industry survey has revealed the average pay for a Geologist in Australia is at $92,610 base per year, with starting pay at $53,000 for entry-level to as much as $144,000 for those with at least 5 years’ experience. 

There are only a little over 8,000 Geologists who are actively employed in the country and future growth is relatively stable compared with other occupations at increasing high demand.  Nevertheless, with workers leaving over the next few years and new jobs being created with the mining business picking up anew, the industry estimates that in the next 5 years, there may be around 4,000 job opportunities for qualified and experienced Geologists seeking to move companies or interstate, including those from overseas wanting to migrate.  

Essentials:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or related field
• Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience within the last 5 years
• Experience in field exploration and familiarity with drilling and sampling techniques
• Working knowledge of geological database software (e.g. Aquire)
• Excellent English communication skills
• Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team
