Veterinary is licensed occupation that remains in the medium to long-term skills shortage list in Australia. Veterinarians (Vets) or sometimes called Veterinary Physicians or Vet Surgeons, are medical professionals responsible for diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases, ailments and injuries of animals.

Like General Practitioners or Physicians who are examining and treating human illnesses, Veterinarians are also conducting physical examinations on animals with diseases or abnormal conditions and sending them, if needed, for laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests. They can administer and prescribe drugs, analgesics and anaesthetics to treat animals. Veterinarians can also perform surgery, wound dressing, including obstetric services. They provide advices on health, nutrition, hygiene, breeding and proper care of animals, as well as participate in programs for the prevention of animal diseases and their potential outbreak.

Most Veterinarians work within the Professional, Scientific and Technical Service industry and majority of them are in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland. Their field of specialization may either be for a particular animal group or in a particular specialty area such as cardiology, chiropractic, dermatology, or critical care.

To become a Veterinarian in Australia, you must complete a relevant Bachelor’s Degree accredited by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council Inc (AVBC). You must also gain relevant on-the-job training and/or experience, and secure registration with the National Veterinary Board, or in the case of New Zealand Veterinarians, must hold a current practicing NZ certificate. All other overseas Veterinarians are required to pass the National Veterinary Examinations (NVE) prior to registration or licensing.

The demand for Veterinarians is projected to increase in the next 5 years based on industry report, with approximately 6,000 new job opportunities becoming available. On the average, Veterinarians are currently earning $30/hour base or $60,000 base per annum for a 40-hour weekly work.
